Breakthrough

Any series on the Western Theater of the Civil War must include Chickamauga, The Confederate Army of Tennessee’s greatest victory. Gen Longstreet and his corps from the Army of Northern Virginia were shipped west to assist the Army of Tennessee in trapping the Federal Army in the mountains of Northern Georgia as the Yanks probed the valleys south of Chattanooga. As the battle progressed on September 20th Longstreet saw a weakness due to a mistake of troop movements in the Union line. He forced a breakthrough of the Federal line which resulted in a Confederate victory. Paintings have been done on these ANV troops in the battle, but the soldiers of the Confederate Army of Tennessee deserve their credit too. My painting portrays the 25th Tennessee of Bushrod Johnson’s Division as they swarm over the La Fayette Road and overcome the Federals occupying the farmhouse of  the Brotherton family. This cabin was being used as a field hospital and had a number of wounded Federal officers. It was noted that the Confederate’s captured a number of Federal officer swords from this site.
